Artivism |
For my personal project, I chose to look into the topic of artivism. I was passionate in pursuing my thoughts about mental health at school through the media of visual arts. At AISL, I feel that mental health isn't something that is talked about often enough in the appropriate grade levels. So as a result I created two art pieces, each showcasing a mental health issue. The reasoning for choosing visual arts as my media is because of the way it speaks to the viewers. I have always been passionate about art, and even completed my grade 5 PYP exhibition on expression through dance. I specifically focused on realistic drawing and self portraits because it was something I'd been exposed to the year prior which I quickly gained interest in. Throughout the process of my personal project, I've been really proud of my progress related to my drawing skills. I remember finishing my first self portrait in grade 9 and thinking it looks really good. Now, a year later, it looks pretty bad compared to all the progress I've made on my most recent portraits incorporated in my personal project products. Through my artworks, I hope you look at mental health a little differently and hopefully join me in breaking away from the stigma and normalizing it in today's society.

Challenges
One of my biggest challenges was pushing through the project to get to the part I actually enjoyed which was creating the product. I found it difficult to stay motivated through half my project, in order to start actually creating the product which was fun for me. A way I overcame this was by creating small deadlines for myself. I found it easier to complete a difficult task when I set a personal deadline for myself to finish.

Achievements
Creating the product was the most enjoyable. Getting to put together an artwork with all these skills I had accumulated was a lot of fun. And after it was finished I felt very satisfied with what I had made. I am most proud of the progress I've made with my drawing skills. Looking back at the first “realistic” drawing I ever made, it looks really bad compared to the new tips and tricks I applied to my most recent drawing which looks 1000x better.

Advice
Some advice that I think a lot of people would give to next year’s grade 10 is to choose a topic that you are truly interested in. A lot of the work you will have to complete for the personal project is required but not necessarily enjoyable, so choosing something that is really of interest to you helps ease the process a little bit.
