Adolescent Mental Health Webcomic |
For my personal project, my goal was to create a development plan (this includes everything from the plot progression to rough episode guides) for a webcomic that I intend on creating by the end of this year. Additionally, I worked to improve my digital drawing skills by creating 4 concept art pieces related to the plot. Personal project was an opportunity for us to explore our passions and for me, who has so many hobbies and interests it was difficult to choose just one, however, I chose this product as one of the things I’ve been wanting to pursue is drawing and gaining enough artistic knowledge to create my own characters with my own artistic style. In terms of the topic and main theme, I inquired into adolescent mental health because it has been an interest of mine for some time now and I feel as though this is a conversation that needs to be brought up more often than it is. Too often mental health is overlooked in adolescents despite them being in the higher demographic of those affected by various conditions. Through the plot and the journeys of my characters, I not only want to spread awareness about this topic but also encourage people to seek help and/or support if they feel they need it.

Challenges
DEFINITELY using my self and time management effectively was the most challenging and I think this was especially so because we had such a long period of time to complete it. I already had issues with procrastination but with the additional work of the project along with my other academic responsibilities, I didn't realise how much I needed to prove in this area. In terms of overcoming it, I think just planning my weeks ahead and setting personal deadlines for myself did somewhat help. |
Achievements
This might seem like the most obvious answer, but I really enjoyed making the product and being creative. Especially when it came to actually drawing the concept art and coming up with various characters and the plot despite it being incredibly difficult. I would say that concept art is something I'm most proud of as well

Advice
Choose a product/project that is challenging, but still within your capabilities (I learnt this the hard way)... be realistic :). You’re going to hear this a lot and it’s much easier said than done but, DON’T PROCRASTINATE. Meet with your supervisor whenever you feel lost or confused or if there are shifts in your thinking.
