Design of a Skatepark |
Personal Project gives every IB student the opportunity to discover their own interests outside of academics. Personally, Personal Project has allowed me to view problems as less of a challenge and more of an inviting experience, that can teach me a lot of skills. My project relates most to the global context of identities and relationships. I decided to create a skatepark for one main reason. That reason is that I could never do any of the sports that I liked in Zambia as creating a skatepark or parkour gym was not at the top of the priorities. When doing my research I also stumbled across the growing lack of social interaction outside. This was caused in part to COVID-19, but also because teens didn't have a good place to be. This made me realize that I could relate my project to the identities and relationships in, global context. This lets me look at my skatepark as more than just a collection of features. Instead, I would look at it in the way people would interact with it. For example, my skatepark has three main platforms. The idea of these is to draw people in and then to stay on said platforms. Whilst my skatepark isn’t going to be built I think that looking into solutions for the problems are important. Overall the goal for my personal project is to create a space for skaters of all different skill levels to come together in the same place. These skaters will be able to communicate and freely share ideas whilst being active outside. Enjoy my personal project!

Challenges
My biggest challenge with my personal project was to do with the software that I used. It was difficult to create all of the features that I wanted to create, especially the round ones. This led me to scrap the idea of having a snake-like bowel or a bowl. However, this worked in my favour as it made my entire skatepark more beginner-friendly, which is what I was aiming for.

Achievements
I enjoyed learning about how to design different features. I have been intrigued by 3D design software for a while and this project gave me the excuse to pressure this passion. I’m most proud of the turning ramp on the back right side of my park. It took me a while to figure out how I could make it within SketchUp, hence the triangles.

Advice
I would say that time management is a major part of the personal project. A calendar is on the libguides that you use and you should utilize it and follow it. Whilst it might be strange at first, it will greatly improve the quality of your report and remove some of the stress towards the end of the project. I would also advise people to choose what they want to do. If you are doing a project that you aren't interested or invested in then it will be a lot harder to motivate yourself to work on it.
