Access to First-Aid in Zambia |
The access to medical and emergency care is a significant issue in the majority of underdeveloped and developing countries. Not only that but in some of those countries many individuals do not have the opportunity to learn about the basics of healthcare such as first-aid. Therefore, for my Personal Project, I decided to create a product which could contribute to reducing this issue in Zambia. To do so, I designed a first aid brochure which specifically targeted children, to then donate it to an orphanage in the community. As a result, through this entire process, I was not only to increase my own knowledge and the first-aid knowledge of children from the orphanage but I was also able to create a closer connection with the Zambian community. In fact, considering that I am new in Zambia, I was able to learn more about my host country and what other issues its citizens are currently facing.

Challenges
The most challenging part of my project was the fact that it had to involve the community. Considering that I am new in the country, it was hard to find an orphanage here in Lusaka without any contacts. Not only that, but the pandemic made everything even more difficult as I needed to find an orphanage that allowed outside people to come and visit. However, after two weeks of research, and by discussing with a lot of individuals in my surroundings, I was able to finally find an orphanage.

Achievements
The most enjoyable part of my project was definitely when I got to visit and donate my booklet to the orphanage. It allowed me to spend time and discuss with children of all ages and I was able to create a closer connection between myself and the Zambian community. Considering that I had never done any first-aid course in the past, I am really proud of what I was able to accomplish as a whole. I believe that I was able to successfully apply the knowledge that I was taught through the first-aid brochure I designed.
